GSW Additional Resources and Information

GeoScienceWorld (GSW) is a nonprofit corporation formed by a group of leading geoscientific organizations for the purpose of making geoscience research and related information easily and economically available via the Internet. GSW is an unprecedented collaboration of six leading earth science societies and one institute.

The Founding Organizations:

American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG),
American Geological Institute (AGI),
Geological Society of America (GSA),
The Geological Society of London (GSL),
Mineralogical Society of America (MSA),
Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM), and
Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG)

These Founders have worked together with other geoscience societies and university presses to develop an electronic research resource that is unprecedented in our field of science. Initially, GeoScienceWorld (GSW) will deliver online the aggregated journal content of the Founding Organizations and of other not-for-profit and independent geoscience publishers. With time, other material such as maps, books, and geoscience digital data will be included or inter-linked. When technically practical, GSW will include non-English publications.

Corporate Profile

GSW is a not-for-profit, tax exempt 501(c)(3) corporation formed by a group of geoscientific organizations in 2004 with the sole purpose of making geoscience research and information easily available to the scientific community and the public in an online digital format which facilitates education and future research. In total, these organizations represent over 100,000 geoscientists engaged in basic and applied research and education in the geosciences.

GSW is governed by a Board of Directors and advised by an Advisory Council composed of representatives of the participating publishers.

Our Vision

The vision for GSW is societies working together in a leadership role to advance and promote the geosciences and benefit geoscientists and their societies worldwide to:

better integrate geoscience research from different disciplines and multiple sources;
significantly increase readership and circulation for all journals participating in the aggregation;
make journals more accessible to a wider audience within the scientific and academic communities, industry, and especially less developed countries;
increase accessibility, use, and preservation of past literature;
maximize publishing advantages for authors;
enhance and expedite literature searches for research and information;
reduce replication of research;
respond to evolving research, presentation, education, and technology opportunities in the electronic information age for the creation, maintenance, operation, dissemination, and preservation of geoscience information and interactive abilities; and
protect and enhance the viability and independence of each organization's publishing programs while constantly exploring and incorporating the benefits of cooperation.

Our Mission

The mission of GeoScienceWorld is:

to be the most comprehensive, widely-accessible, easy to use, integrated, and cost-effective online resource for journals in the geological and earth sciences;
to operate independently and not for profit, with policies and practices that respect and support the needs of publishers, authors, educators, researchers, and librarians;
to respond effectively to evolving research, presentation, education, and technology opportunities in the electronic information age for the creation, maintenance, operation, dissemination, and preservation of geoscience information and interactive facilities; and,
to protect the viability and independence of society publishing programs while constantly exploring and incorporating valuable economic and strategic benefits of collaboration.
For the future, our mission will be to expand the online research resource to include books, field guides, maps, databases, and other information and interactive capabilities for the geological and earth sciences, and to serve as a portal for promoting meetings, field trips, short courses, and other activities that are available through participating societies.
